Past and present meet at Casas Novas Countryside Hotel

Hidden behind an impressive Baroque façade from the 18th century, an enchanting hotel with royal allure is waiting for you. The building

The hotel’s building is one of great history. This old manor house used to be owned by the 2nd Count of Penamacor, António Saldanha Albuquerque de Castro Ribafria. You can still see his coat of arms engraved in the stone above the entrance. It was built in 1749 and transformed into a hotel in 2008. Many traditional elements of the house have been preserved, like the beautiful cloisters, the thick stone walls, the library and the old winery.

Rooms

The hotel has a total of 33 rooms. Some of them are in the oldest part of the house and full of original elements, others are more modern with wonderful, big balconies overlooking the surrounding landscape. They all have a pleasant interior decoration to make you feel at home.

Facilities

The quality of the hotel asks for an equally high quality restaurant. Like in the hotel, the focus lies on preservation of the regional traditions on one side, and innovation on the other. As you might know the gastronomy of Trás-os-Montes is one of robust flavours and aromas, but with this modern twist it becomes more sophisticated. Be sure to also ask advice on the wine. They can serve you beautiful Portuguese reds and whites and tell you all about them.

Besides the restaurant and bar, other facilities are the outdoor pool (open in summer), the indoor heated pool, a jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish bath, gym and massage room. Because the spa welcomes outside public as well, it is open all year, which is a real plus. When the sun is out, you will also enjoy relaxing in the nice garden.

Personal experience

My personal highlights in Casas Novas Countryside Hotel were the terrific bed (I had a great night sleep!), the wonderful indoor pool and SPA (after a long day of sight seeing it’s great to take a dip in the warm water), the very lovely staff (service is always a thing for me) and the view of the green countryside from the room and the garden.
